According to reports, the United States is not alone in having problems with the DePuy ASR line of hip replacement products. In several other countries, the United Kingdom especially, have reported that patients have been experiencing high failure rates.


The British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society said in a recent statement that data on the ASR XL Acetabular System from four surgeons show the rate of second operations, or revisions, ranges from 21 percent after four years to 49 percent after six years.  John Skinner, an orthopedic surgeon and chairman of the groups’ expert advisory group on metal bearing hips, claims in a statement that about 10,000 of the hips were implanted in the U.K.,...
